1970: Wonderful Wigan

Wigan is embracing the concrete age, replacing its crumbling old architecture - the butt of many a cruel joke - with futuristic looking, high-rise structures. In this quest to achieve 1970s modernity, however, is there a danger that the town might lose its character?

Jack Pizzey interviews folk singer Keith Roberts, who is immortalising some of the town's old landmarks - like the illusive Wigan Pier - in song, and who is determined to make life difficult for the would-be modernisers.

This clip is from Nationwide.
