"I will take some time to let the dust settle, we will sit down and have a chat and take it from there.

"My players have given everything but it wasn't enough in the end to get over the line.

"We knew going into the last four games we would probably have to win the four of them, we got three but just at the final hurdle it was not enough.

"What we have done is another campaign where we have taken it right to the wire. Some you win and some you lose. It will hurt for a bit but you learn from defeat and we will learn from tonight."

Slovakia finished second in England's group but must wait to confirm a play-off place. They will be in if Greece do not beat Gibraltar on Tuesday night, and Bosnia and Herzegovina defeat Estonia to finish second in Group H.

I know Martin O'Neill and Roy Keane and the backroom staff and it is no surprise we find ourselves here talking about an Irish victory. I always thought they were capable of getting the result they needed, but they had to score first. Once they go in front they are tough to play against.

All four of James McClean’s goals in these qualifiers came in the second half of away matches.

McClean scored the winning goal in three different matches for Ireland in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers – without his goals, they would have been six points worse off.

I actually think only Chris Coleman can answer the question over his own future.

Personally I think he will walk away now - I do not think he will be short of offers.

I think he will be lined-up for a big job if that is what he wants.

We are not going to be one of the seeded teams - so we will be playng at home first.

We have not been that great at home and we are not always the best when we have to be on the front foot asking questions, tonight worked like a treat for us for those reasons and it might work for us in the play-offs.

Ireland are a dangerous under-dog in any game because they don't give a lot away.

This man says that Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland will not be seeded.

Gareth Bale is massively influential for Wales, pivotal, and to miss him for the last two games...but I do not want to make excuses and the Irish were magnificent.

Of course we missed Gareth.

Wales have won just one of their last 11 matches against Republic of Ireland (W1 D4 L6) and none of the last eight.

This victory means that Republic of Ireland ended the 2018 World Cup qualifiers unbeaten away from home (W3 D2 L0).

When Wales lost Joe Allen, upon reflection perhaps Chris Coleman might have introduced somebody else rather than taking Aaron Ramsey away from the forward area of the field.

I felt that was a bit of a let-off for Ireland.

Who could the Republic get in the play-offs? It's too early to say. But with a world ranking of 34 they are not going to be one of the four seeded sides.
