West Ham were little more than three minutes away from a much-needed win.
It had not been pretty, the Hammers had not played well but had they held on, it would not have mattered.
Three points, a first win in six and a chance to end a disappointing campaign on a high.
Instead, after Lesley Oguchukwu's injury-time strike earned Southampton a point, the hosts were booed off.
They offered nowhere near enough against the Premier League's bottom side and were arguably fortunate to take a point from the game.
Given the quality of the players in the squad, it seems remarkable that the Hammers are languishing in 16th but it will come as no shock to anyone who witnessed their draw with Southampton.
Julen Lopetegui's time in charge could not have gone much worse but there has been no significant improvement under Graham Potter with just 13 points taken from his 13 league games.
An important summer awaits but with five games still remaining, Potter needs to have a way to break the current malaise and bring some optimism back to London Stadium.
