Pointing out and naming things for baby

Simply pointing out the things your child is interested in and naming them is a good way for your child to learn new vocabulary.

Benefits of the point and name game

  • Naming things your child is interested in is great for bonding.

  • Sharing one-to-one moments when playing helps with building their confidence and the connection between you.

  • By naming things they're already interested in, they're more likely to pay attention to you, speeding up their learning.

  • This activity is great for learning the meanings of words, even if they can't say them yet.

How to play the point and name game

This activity is a fun way for your baby to learn new words and develop their communication skills.

It's super simple - see what interests your baby and name the object!

You could set out their favourite toys or household items in front of them and start talking about it to them as they focus on each one.

Let your child take the lead and point to what they are interested in. Doing this helps them understand and memorise the words you use to name or describe the item.

Encourage your baby to point at different items or let them guide your finger to what interests them. This could be part of an object too, like a teddy bear's eyes or ears.
