Gasperini departs Atalanta after nine years

Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini, who led them to the Europa League title in 2024, has announced he will leave after nine years in charge.

Gasperini, 67, revealed in February that he would not be renewing his contract with the Bergamo-based Serie A club, which was set to expire in June.

The Italian has been linked with the vacant role at Roma, after Claudio Ranieri's retirement.

"Only in the last few hours have I really decided to put an end to this wonderful nine-year-long story," said Gasperini.

"But let's not say goodbye. I don't like that.

"We've managed to achieve some unquestionably extraordinary results. I would have liked to do more, I didn't succeed, but we still celebrated a lot together and I'm sure you will do it again."

Under Gasperini, Atalanta played in the Champions League for the first time and were transformed from relegation battlers to regular contenders for European qualification.
