When it comes to picking a red wine to use for this recipe, make sure it’s fairly robust while not too heavy and tannic. Malbec and Merlot both work well.

Ingredients

Method

  1. Stud the skin of the orange with the cloves.

  2. Heat the orange juice and muscovado sugar in a pan until the sugar has dissolved.

  3. Add the clove-studded orange along with the vanilla pod (if using), ginger, stick of cinnamon, star anise and the red wine.

  4. Stir in the sloe gin and heat gently over a low heat for about 10 minutes.

  5. Serve in glasses with a twist of orange peel and a cinnamon stick in each if you’ve got them to spare.
