Watch: Life for children in the 2010s
Find out what life was like for children in the 2010s.
Maya: This was built to host the Olympic Games. Every four years, they hold the Olympics in a different city. In 2012, it was London’s turn. I was your age when it was on.
Nathan: Did you come and see the Olympics here, at the Olympic Park?
Maya: No, but we watched lots of it at home on TV.
Lucy: What sports did they play?
Maya: A lot. Running, jumping, football, gymnastics and loads more. And athletes from all over the world came to London to take part. From places like Africa, Asia, Europe and America. I , we used to eat food from different areas of the world each night when we watched the Olympics. One night we had sushi from Japan. Another night, we had fajitas from Mexico. Mum was able to buy the food from the shops, and then found all sorts of exciting ideas online. I dad saying…
Dad: We never had so much exciting food when I was younger.
Nathan: Yep, that sounds like dad.
Maya: We also got a tablet that she shared in the family. I looked up all the winners and read about the sports so I could tell everyone at school. It was also meant to be the greenest Olympics ever.
Lucy: What does ‘greenest’ mean?
Maya: It means being kind to the environment. So, while the Olympics was on, we learnt about the environment and climate change at school.
Nathan: We were learning about that last week.
Maya: We went litter collecting at school and I asked mum and dad if we could start recycling our rubbish.
Lucy: We still do that today.
Maya: We were all really excited about electric cars being made, but we didn’t really see any back then.
Nathan: One of our neighbours got an electric car last year. It’s very nice.
Maya: More cars will be electric soon, which is much better for the environment.
Lucy: What is that?
Maya: That was built for the Olympics and it’s got a giant tunnel slide from top to bottom. You can see the whole Olympic Park from the top.
Nathan: Wow!
Maya: Shall we have a go?
All: Yeah!
